Consultation to establish a Special Educational Needs Facility at Churchwood Primary Academy

East Sussex County Council has recently undertaken a review of its educational provision for children and young people with special educational needs. It has identified that there is a need for more specialist primary age provision in Hastings that can meet the need of children with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

We would like to consult with you on our plans to establish a Special Educational Needs Facility at Churchwood Primary Academy for up to five pupils in Key Stage 2 with an Education Health and Care Plan for Autistic Spectrum Disorder combined with speech and language communication needs. In addition to a focus on improving pupils’ academic attainment, the new Facility would also have a focus on social emotional development, achieved through an inclusive atmosphere, supporting integration with the wider community.

The five places would be in addition to Churchwood’s normal admissions number. An under-utilised space in the academy would be redeveloped to provide the specialist space required. It would open during autumn 2018 with support and funding from East Sussex County Council.

It is also proposed that staff in the Facility would provide advice and support to other Early Years and Key Stage 1 providers, as well as providing transition support for pupils moving to secondary school.
