Local Govering Body

Co-opted Governors

Katie Kent

My name is Katie Kent and I currently work as a HLTA at West St Leonards Primary Academy.

I have 3 children, 18 year old twin sons and a 14 year old daughter who all attended the Academy. I originally sat on the Local Governing Body as a parent governor, but since becoming a permanent member of staff within the Academy, I am now a co-opted Governor.

I recognise the importance of providing a safe, caring, supportive and effective environment that brings opportunities for each child to make those essential steps in life.

Working within the Academy has enabled me to recognise how important it is that the children at the Academy are equipped with the knowledge and skills to enable them to achieve and succeed in life.  I hope to utilise my skills and experience in education, and as a parent, to support the Local Governing Body in fulfilling our aspirations for the future of West St Leonards Primary Academy.

I am a senior Civil Servant working for the Department for Transport. My background is in road danger and policing although I have recently branched out a bit. In my day job I spend a lot of time working in partnership with stakeholders, assessing information, developing policies, and mentoring staff. I hope to bring some of my experience, skills and knowledge to support the Governing Body which I joined in 2021.

I was born in Hastings, live in St Leonards, and went to Filsham Valley School (as it was then) so I feel a particular affinity for the local area and am keen to give back and help to make it a good place to live and grow up.

I am passionate about social mobility and helping to ensure that all children, no matter their backgrounds or family circumstances, have an equal opportunity to succeed and be happy.

Starting out as a teacher in Hertfordshire, I spent a number of years teaching in upper Key Stage 2 before considering a move to the south coast. The appeal of West St Leonards meant that I turned down a senior leadership position in North London to become a year six teacher here in St Leonards, moving into a leadership role after a year.

After a number of years in the classroom, I was selected to become a Lead Practitioner for the University of Brighton Academies Trust in 2015 and split my time between being a senior leader at West St Leonards whilst also working across other Trust schools to support other teaching professionals and senior leaders in their practice. My work in this field led me to become part of the central School Improvement Team for the academies trust where I continued this work for schools and also delivered training for local schools looking to teach Talk for Writing.

After the retirement of the previous Principal, I considered how I could best support West St Leonards and took on the Vice Principal role which I currently hold, dedicating my time once again to a single school to support the excellent staff in continuing to provide an exceptional quality of teaching and learning to each child we have on role.

I am delighted to be Principal of Churchwood Primary Academy. This is my first Headship post having previously worked at Churchwood as a Vice Principal for eight years and prior to this as a Key Stage Two Leader. During this time I have led a number of subjects including English, Assessment, History, Geography and Physical Education and I have also worked as a SENCO.

Prior to our conversion to academy status, I worked as a Teaching and Learning Consultant for the Local Authority supporting schools within the local area. Since academy conversion I have trained as a Lead Coach for the Trust. I am passionate about teaching and learning and enjoy working collaboratively with other colleagues across the Trust to bring about the very best outcomes for our pupils.

I am delighted to lead a dedicated team of professionals at WSLPA and am proud of our achievements to date including becoming a national training school for Talk for Writing in 2016.
Our vision of Excellent Learning and Friendship is delivered through engaging, inspiring and knowledge rich curriculum that meets the needs of all our pupils.

I am passionate about ensuring the best possible learning experiences so our pupils can be the best.
